The L Word Series Finale: Final Thoughts

This past season was the last for The L Word on Showtime. We were told that Jenny was going to die and that the season would should the events preceding her death with the last episode revealing what happened to her.

Well, the season finale came and no solution was given. The actress who played Alice informed us at the end of the episode that there would be interrogation tapes which can be viewed on Showtime.com where secrets would be revealed. It turns out there was seven tapes and in order to presented here are the secrets.

Tina: She had her first girl-girl experience with her older sister, who now hates her and is a born again Christian. Tina committed insect.

Shane: She burned her business down. As to why, who knows.

Helena: The money that she had stolen was given away to liberal causes. The person, Helena robbed was a conservative. Also, Sgt. Duffy is very interested in Helena in a sexual way.

Niki: She stole the movie Les Girls and hid it in Jenny's attic. Why, it was a crappy movie that would kill her career and she figured nobody would ever find it in Jenny's attic and if they did, Jenny would get the blame.

Max: When Jenny broke up with her/him for a French girl, Max took Jenny's toothbrush and scrubbed the bathroom floor with it.

Bette: She wanted to carry the second child for her and Tina, but Tina did not ask her.

Alice: Bette asked Alice to help set up a party for her to promote a gallery opening and Alice invited Tina and her husband, thus making her the one who gets Bette and Tina together.

During Alice's tape, Sgt. Duffy is grilling Alice about her bisexuality when Alice says "What does this have to do with who killed Jenny?" And Sgt. Duffy says, "You think somebody killed Jenny?"

And so we end the biggest disaster for a series ending ever. I mean, what was the point of the whole season. Why were the cops grilling the ladies about topics totally unrelated to the investigation? Will we ever find out what happened?

There is some talk about a spin off set in a women's prison where Alice will be incarcerated. The thought is, that she gets busted for Jenny's death. Why? Do they really care for the fans of this show or not?

When The L Word started, it was a great show and quickly ran out of steam. It seems like the creators only had enough good ideas for one season, let only six. But to end this series in this crappy way is just inexcusable.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 29-April-2009

The Red Sox lost and the Yankees won, always a bad sign.

Fox TV is going to pass on the Obama press conference and show Lie to Me as scheduled. I don't know, but it seems to be Obama is constantly doing these press conferences and why all the networks need to show it is beyond me. Fox is taking a good stand here and maybe Lie to Me, a very good show, will get a nice ratings boost. One of the best shows on TV.

NCIS had part one of a two part pilot for a spin off for next season. So far so good, I like the characters and they have some pretty good chemistry. And a chance for some undercover Mission Impossible style shows makes this a must see for next season.

The Mentalist has been constantly entertaining this season, just hope CBS does not screw with the time slot and move it somewhere like Sunday night.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 28-April-2009

I guess there will be only seven L Word Interrogation tapes, right now on Showtime.com we have part 1 of an interview with Ilene Chaiken, the creator. Maybe she will clear up what the frak happened to Jenny. At some point, when I get in the mood, I will devote a blog to all the so-called secrets revealed in these tapes.

House has two episodes left, and it looks like the good doctor has some psychological problem resulting from some undiagnosed disease. Don't know where this is going, I think that they are losing creative juice.

24 had Jack back in his furious mode as he tries to track down Tony while dealing with the effects of the toxin. You know, there has to be an antidote that will save Jack at the end. I liked the part where Jack yelled at Janis (Janeane Garofalo) when she was complaining. I could see Chole pull her aside and tell her how CTU agents used to smash the heads of the computer guys into the desk when they mouthed off. Wonder if Tony survives for the next season.

On the Futon Critic, I see that CBS is moving Harper's Island to Saturday night at 9 pm. Too much competition at 10 pm Thursday perhaps? Maybe if the frakking networks would not put all the shows on at the same time, ratings might be better.

I also see that Fox TV is not going to show Obama's latest press conference scheduled for tomorrow night. About time the networks stand up to this crap. Why Obama has to constantly schedule these press conferences that pre-empty my favorite shows is ridiculous. I want to watch Lie to Me, not Obamo lying to me.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 27-April-2009

I could not find a lot of Yankee fans at work today. I guess losing three straight to the Red Sox has a way of making them want to avoid friendly banter. One Yankee fan sent a YouTube video at 6am Sat to my work email of the Yankees' theme song, in spite of the fact the Yankees lost the previous night. I sent me a YouTube video of "Turn out the Lights, the Party's over".

After watching that series, I really have to wonder why the sports pundits picked the Yankees to win the division, I saw the same players as they did and I knew they were not good at all. Maybe I should be a sports writer.

Still cannot believe ABC renewed Private Practice. The Unusuals better get picked up for another season.

NBC, according to TV.com, is going to renew Heroes but with a shorter order than this season. It seems to be the trend to pick up shows for 13 episodes, the full 22-24 episode season may become a thing of the past. This is how British TV operates, and quite frankly it is easier to come up with 13 good shows than 22.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 26-April-2009

I joined the Blackberry clan by upgrading my plan yesterday. At least I will have Internet and email access when I go to Harrisburg to visit my mother. She does not even get a newspaper let alone a computer with Internet access, and instead of watching the local news, she prefers reruns of MASH and Everybody Loves Raymond.

I caught up with a number of shows yesterday via DVR. Private Practice was as moronic as usual. The Audra McDonald character is being wooed by some other practice to come and run it and practice medicine the way it should be. When she was in charge before, didn't the practice go broke? Pete has a chance to be with a beautiful wonderful woman (played by Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs' real life wife) and drops her to be with Violet and maybe his baby. The other potential baby daddy, Brian Benben character decides he needs to express to Violet his love for her. And Violet the responsible adult that she is, still has not done any testing to determine who the frak the father is. And she is a frakking therapist?

Grey's Anatomy featured the dying Lizzie as she plans Meredith and Derek's weddings. George and Alex are doing the moping now in the show while Meredith is oh so happy that she is getting married. Sadly, this is an improvement over Private Practice.

Some good shows I saw were CSI and CSI: NY, both with great writing and great performances.

Harper's Island is really starting to jell into one of those ridiculous shows that make you laugh at the oh so serious antics. Too bad this is not on FX or HBO, definitely could have a lot of nudity and sex play. The latest victim has a bag of money and a $50,000 check as he leaves the island only to get killed by a hidden gun. Also, only one of the six victims has been discovered by the one cop on this island. He plays Bobby on Supernatural and you can almost see him thinking, I got to get Sam and Dean here.

Tonight, Law & Order: Criminal Intent features the first episode with Jeff Goldblum as one of the detectives. I am looking forward to seeing that episode as Goldblum is a very underrated actor.

And in a another big win, the Red Sox beat the Yankees 16-11, can they do a clean sweep tonight?

Oh well.

Thoughts: 25-April-2009

Via DVR, I saw the latest episode of American Chopper. Believe it or not, Jr. is back in the shop, with Sr starting to fight with him again. They also had a family dinner together, where we got to see Mikey's girlfriend. So the big drama of Jr getting fired is all over. I also have to say, why Sr. is even out on the floor building bikes. As his employees have stated, there is a lot less builds so why is he needed? He should be trying to hustle and get work for the shop. Fake soap opera drama is driving the show, we don't even get to see how the fabrication is being created for the bikes. Time to end this show.

Southland won the 10 pm Thursday time slot over Harper's Island and Private Practice. NBC might have a hit here. I have all three on DVR to watch over the weekend. It is nice to see NBC strike some gold for a change.

Red Sox beat the Yankees in 11 innings last night, the not so mighty bullpen of New York failed to stop the Red Sox. Game 2 is on today at 4 pm. I have read a bunch of articles highly critical of the new Yankee stadium. Even the New Yorker weighed in on how bad the stadium is. The Yankees are in trouble, and I love it.

Last night on Ghost Whisperer, Melinda discovered that she is pregnant via Jim in his original body. Jim, who took over the body of Sam (person who died and crossed right over) is planning on attending med school and as Sam needs to marry Melinda PDQ. If anybody else was starring as Melinda, I probably would be ripping this show, but Jennifer Love Hewitt casts a spell on me. Similar to the one the stars of Charmed casted on me.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 24-April-2009

ABC renewed Private Practice...I cannot fraking believe it. This show is terrible, from the writing to the poor actors forced to act these horrible story lines. You know, while I think Reaper has its flaws, it is far superior to this crap and deserves to be renewed in a world where Private Practice gets renewed.

And I did notice an ad for Reaper during Smallville last night, maybe the CW has not given up on this show.

I mean why, did ABC renew Private Practice, it is not like the ratings are any good. It is not like the fans of Grey's Anatomy care about this show or watch it. I cannot believe that I am going to being watching another season of this bad bad bad show.

At the behest of one of my co-workers, I watched UFO Hunters. The show was not as bad as I thought it would be, the one pro-UFO guy was buying every BS story hook, line, and sinker. At least one of the team members was a bit skeptical and pointed out some flaws in his thinking.

Miss USA and Gay Marriage

I am off from work today to go see one of my many doctors.

I heard about this controversy from the Naked News about the recent Miss USA pageant. Perez Hilton (an Internet gossip columnist I believe) was one of the judges (Miss USA pageants must be desperate for ratings) asked Miss CA what she thought about gay marriage. She replied that she was raised to believe that marriage was only between a man and a woman. When I guess she ended up losing, (have no idea who won) and Hilton is ripping into her saying she lost because of her answer.

First, I have no clue why people watch beauty pageants, why anyone participates in them, and why anybody cares what the contestants think. As for gay marriage, my personal belief is that any two people who are so much in love with each other that they want to proclaim that love in a public declaration, more power to them. I have no issues with gay marriage or gay rights, I was very happy to see my current home state of CT, passing a bill to make gay marriage a reality for this state. Also happy to see that Gov. Rell is going to sign it.

As for Miss CA, she has a right to her opinion, as I have a right to disagree with it. Naked News also reported that only she got this controversial question, and if that is true, that is definitely not fair. Why did not Hilton ask each contestant that question?

Again, I could care less about beauty pageants or who Perez Hilton is. The times that are a changing as more states are going for gay marriage. Society is finally evolving.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 22-April-2009

I watched Reaper last night, episode 9 in the 13 episode order for Season 2. I thought it took a few steps back after a couple of good episodes. Looks like Sam is going to have to challenge the Devil in a game that he is good in, in order to win back his soul. Problem is, I have not seen anything that Sam is good in. Morgan, the Devil's other son, is mad at Sam, Ben's demon girlfriend is mad at him, Sock is oblivious to everything. Four episodes left. I never see the CW do commercials for this show during Smallville and Supernatural, you would think the audience for Reaper would be watching those two shows.

Fringe had a good episode last night. This show has really be keeping its promising premise fresh and interesting. I love Walter Bishop.

Tonight, Lost has one of those clip shows where they show what is happening so far. I just wish that they would show new episodes and not recycle old episodes in these clip shows.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 21-April-2009

Seems I got a Reaper fan all upset with me, for my comments about the end of Reaper. Tyler Labine making a pilot for another show, does not mean anything. The creators leaving to do new shows for a rival network, does not mean anything. The CW cancelling the show regardless of letter campaigns, does not mean anything. Maybe a Reaper comic could come out. Buffy, Angel, and Farscape have them, seem to be doing well with that. Check out Midtown Comics website.

Desperate Housewives had another good episode this past Sunday. It was the best since the Beau Bridges handyman show. I wish that they could make all their episodes that good.

I have a subscription to American Conservative, and was going to let it run out. It appears that the magazine is ending with the May 7 issue. Money problems and low circulation. Never really got that much from this magazine, National Review and American Spectator gives me all the conservative information I need. I know that the Weekly Standard is heavily subsidized, so I wonder how long that will last.

Oh well, got to go and watch the one of the few remaining Reapers tonight.

Thoughts: 20-April-2009

Big win for the Red Sox today as the pound the Baltimore Orioles 12 to 1. Boston pitching is looking strong while the Yankee pitching is looking bad. New York's starters are getting bombed out in the firs couple of innings and their bullpen is terrible.

I remembered to watch the L Word Interrogation Tape today. Alice comes up to bat, her secret, as far as I can tell, is that she set a party up for Bette where she invited Tina and her husband. So Alice was responsible for hooking Bette and Tina up. Then Sgt. Duffy grills her about being bisexual and Alice after an attempt to explain, says "What does this have to do with finding out, Who killed Jenny?" Duffy then says, oh you think Jenny was killed? WTF? If there is no suspicion of foul play then why are you asking all these fraking questions? I though Dragnet was a bad LA cop show, but Sgt. Duffy you take the cake.

Got another spam comment from some group trying to save Reaper. The creative team has signed a deal to work with another studio on future projects. I don't give a frak if it is a top rated CW show, Reaper is dead. Tyler Labine is moving on, why can't you Reaper fans do the same?

Oh well.

Thoughts: 19-April-2009

Great day, the Red Sox are winning and out of last place and the Yankees got killed with the worst inning in their history by the Indians yesterday. For some strange bizarre reason, both the Sporting News and Sports Illustrated had the Yankees winning the division. They have no starting pitching, Joba got rocked, Wang is 0-3, CC looks terrible. And that bullpen is killing them. The Red Sox have this amazing depth in pitching, but the Yankees were going to do better than them according the to sports experts? I laugh at them.

I went to see State of Play yesterday, the new Russell Crowe film directed by Kevin MacDonald. Very good movie with a strong cast and well written story. Some nice twists and turns in the movie. If you like things about reporters investigating and breaking a story, such as All the President's Men or Ron Howard's underrated film, The Paper, check it out.

TV.com reports that the creators of Reaper, Michelle Fazekas and Tara Butters, have signed a deal to develop TV series for a rival studio. Another nail in the cancellation coffin for Reaper. The show has improved this season with it biggest weakness, poor character development of Sam, Sock, and Ben, but it may be too late. Poor ratings killed this show.

Also from TV.com, Mary Louise Parker may be leaving Weeds when her contract ends. Season 5 will be starting soon, and she is signed through Season 6. I have watched every episode of this show and while I find it entertaining, I never understood the raves this show gets. I think it is average at best.

Naked News Weekend Magazine for today reports that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in talks to play Buffy in a movie version. Outside of the two Scooby Doo films and The Grudge (which I thought was a terrible film), she has not been too successful. I can see why she wants to go back to her biggest hit. David Boreanaz who played Angel in the series is doing well with Bones, Alyson Hannigan has a hit show with How I Met your Mother, and Anthony Stewart Head is popping up in a number of British productions. The one guy I thought would be doing well, is Nicholas Brendon, have not seen him in anything lately. As for Joss Whedon, I hope he can make a decent Buffy film, given the crap that he is turning out with Dollhouse.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 18-April-2009

I watched the second episode of Harper's Island last night via DVR. 5 people are dead, the body count is going to rival 24. Still playing like a classic 1980's slasher film, just really long.

Also watched American Chopper last night, Jr and Senior still are apart, with Sr realizing he needs Junior. Almost nothing on the bike builds. One was for the Barnum and Bailey/Ringling Brothers circus, no information on the build and we barely got to see the bike. Did get to see Sr, Mikey, and Jason clown with the clowns.

The commercials featuring the therapist and the Teutels appear to be window dressing, with confirms my belief that the Teutels are back together by the end of this season. Just wish they could do more on the bike builds as that was the selling point for the show.

I have to say that I am really getting tired of all the commercials for the change from analog to digital in June. I cannot believe that many people have analog and that we need to harp and harp on this. Do it already!

Oh well.

Thoughts: 17-April-2009

Just saw on TV.com, that someone is reporting that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles will be cancelled by Fox. No official word from Fox, but it is a highly reliable source according to TV.com. Not really surprised here.

Dollhouse will have an unaired episode and episode 12 will be the season finale. Fox has some convoluted reasoning that Whedon made an extra episode that that it will be on the DVD set. A set I have no interest in buying. Looks like Dollhouse is on its way out.

CSI had a great episode at a SF conference spoofing the classic Star Trek series and the Battlestar Galactica remake. A couple of the Lab Rats, Hodges and Wendy got a chance to shine and reenact some classic Jim Kirk moments. CSI is always trying something different and that is why it is number one. What a seamless transition from Peterson to Fishbourne. And how quickly Fishbourne made himself a member of the cast. I love this show and I love the fact that Hodges got to shine.

Bones last night had the return of Dr. Gordon Gordon played by Stephen Fry. Fry was part of a classic comedy team with Hugh Laurie and together they were quite good in Jeeves and Wooster with Fry playing Jeeves. He returns, partly to remind me that he would have been so much better than Sweets, and also to make Sweets a tad more acceptable. Fry must not have wanted to commit to a 22 American TV show season, I know Laurie is not happy with his workload on House. Now Fry needs to guest star on House and reunite with his old comedy partner.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 16-April-2009

Fox is giving us a treat this week and next, two episodes of Bones. One of the best shows on TV that has been constantly preempted by MLB playoffs, American Idol, and Obama press conferences. This show is great and I am glad Fox is giving us two episodes rather than showing reruns.

The latest TV Guide is a two week issue, and in the blurb for the season finale of Private Practice (to be shown on April 30) the producers promised cliffhangers to be resolved next season. WTF you mean next season, ABC is not going to renew this piece of crap for another season, say it ain't so Joe.

Also in that issue of TV Guide, Southland and The Unusuals were both ripped by the reviewer. I thought both shows were interesting and worth a checking out. Oh well, at least TV.com reports Southland won its slot via the ratings.

Bones teamed up with American Idol last night won big for Fox, so maybe we will see one quality show get renewed.

Oh well.

Paranormal Psudoscience: Debunked

It seems every time I watch the History Channel, I see UFO Files, Monsterquest, and specials on things like ancient astronauts. Show after show pushing one side of the paranormal and pseudoscience without almost no time allotted to the skeptical view. Here is my rundown of the skeptical view.

First there are two great magazines, The Skeptical Inquirer put out by the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and Skeptic put out by the Skeptic's Society. Both magazines do a great job in present an alternative to the paranormal nonsense out there.

Skeptic feature James Randi, a magician who has debunked a lot of phony psychics. One book that he has written, entitled Flim Flam! Psychics, ESP, Unicorns and other Delusions is a nice over view of an assortment of topics from UFOs to Psychics to Ancient Astronauts.

Bermuda Triangle: Lawrence David Kusche has written an excellent book, The Bermuda Triangle Mystery Solved, that totally debunks this topic. He does a lot of research and has the facts to back him up.

Uri Geller: James Randi exposed this guy in The Truth about Uri Geller.

Ancient Astronauts Theory: Two good books, Crash Go the Chariots by Clifford Wilson and The Space Gods Revealed by Ronald Story do an nice job in debunking this theory. Randi, in Flim Flam, has a great chapter debunking this too.

Loch Ness Monster: The Loch Ness Monster: The Evidence by Steuart Campbell and The Loch Ness Mystery Solved by Ronald Binns are sources for alternatives to the theories about Nessie.

UFOs: A pet peeve that I encountered on the Internet are these know it alls who get all in your face that UFO stands for unidentified flying object and not alien space ships. Then they precede to buy all the UFO crap being proposed. Philip Klass wrote several books debunking the various UFO theories, two I liked are UFOs The Public Deceived and UFOs Explained.

JFK Assassination Conspiracy Theories: Same nitpickers I mentioned about, also post about the various conspiracy theories out there, focusing on minute details. Two books Case Closed by Gerald Posner and Reclaiming History: The assassination of JFK by Vincent Buglingi puts all these theories to rest.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 14-April-2009

I keep forgetting a new L Word Interrogation tape premieres each Monday on Showtime.com. This week Bette comes up to bat and her big secret? She wanted to conceive and carry the second child that Tina and her wanted, but Tina did not ask her and went the adoption route instead. Now I know why I keep forgetting, no real secrets advancing the case of Who Killed Jenny?

Starlog after 33 years is ending its print magazine and will be an online magazine. Starlog covered the world of science fiction and actually covered written SF and not just TV and movies. Starlog along with its sister publication Fangoria, did a nice job covering the niche left open by the death of the Warren Famous Monsters of Filmland. Now with the Internet and publications like Rue Morgue ruling the newsstand, Starlog is dead and Fangoria is being published by someone else.

Last night on House, it appeared that folks had recovered from dealing with the aftereffects of Kunter's suicide, then House started to have a hallucination of Amber, Wilson's girlfriend who died while trying to get House home after a night of drinking. I first thought that Kunter should be the hallucination, but Kal Penn is no longer around so they bring Amber back. Have to wait two weeks though, Fox has an excess of Bones episodes to show.

By the way, Bones is a great show, and the more the merrier, about fraking time Fox started to show them.

24 had a soap opera twist last night, Tony went from bad to undercover good and now bad again, killing Larry the FBI agent. Poor Larry, as soon as he acknowledge that Jack was right, he gets killed. I am looking forward to the battle royale between Jack and Tony to rival the fight Jack had with a terrorist in season 2. That is where he fights this guy, an hour after suffering from a near fatal heart attack, grabs his head and jumping/strolling along the side of a wall for leverage snaps his neck. Tony, better watch out.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 13-April-2009

Monday the 13th, I wonder why today is not a bad luck day?

I watched the season finale of Friday Night Lights. So Coach Taylor comes within 30 seconds of winning the state championship in a major upset, and gets fired by Dillon? I thought I detected some foreshadowing with the opening of East Dillon High. I predict that Taylor will get a lot of players off the Panthers who want to stick with their coach and his new team, the Lions, will kill the Panthers in the big showdown next season. But man, Texas High School football is pretty tough to fire a coach who had that kind of season.

My sister clued me to this new show on NBC called Southland, NBC rerun it on Sat night so I was able to see it. Not bad, kind of an interesting take and worthy to watch more episodes. Don't know how this show will do in the ratings.

Also saw the first episode of Harper's Island. A classic 1980's slasher film + 495 minutes - R rated nudity and violence. Do have to say that Standard and Practices have gotten much more lenient since the 1980's. Just misses the nudity. The show is kind of nostalgic for me as I watched a lot of those slasher films via HBO and Cinemax, so it is worth a watch for me.

Saving Grace has its season finale tonight, more will be revealed about God's plan for Grace and Leon. Holly Hunter is really a very brave actress the likes of which is not seen in the USA. You normally have to get a British actress who is willing to take the chance Hunter takes.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 12-April-2009

Happy Easter everyone, the one holiday not sanctioned by the government so if we want time off we have to use our vacation time.

Two of my best friends in the whole wide world have agreed to see Penn and Teller with me on May 21 at Foxwoods MGM Grand. Tickets are $20-30-40, and I could only get three at the $20 range. Show is almost sold out. I cannot wait to see this show.

Dollhouse, in its latest episode, again tries to convince the viewers that there is more going on than just a sick service to fulfill perverted sex fantasies of the rich through rape of brainwashed dolls. Whedon seems to think if he has his characters keep on saying the Dollhouse does a lot of good and is more than that, we will buy it. Kind of hard to do Joss, when the next scene, your head of the Dollhouse is acting our her own fantasy with one of the dolls. Show gets worse and worse as time goes on.

Fox ruined Firefly, Whedon's last good idea, could Dollhouse be Whedon's revenge on Fox? I mean Whedon cannot actually believe this is a good show, right?

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles came to an end (hopefully permanently) this Friday with its season finale. John Connor as a young man, gets tossed into the future and meets his uncle, father, and the woman Cameron was based on. And nobody has heard of John Connor. It also appears that the T-1000 (liquid metal terminator) is fighting Skynet. I thought that they were advanced terminators? This show is really going off in left field, and I could care less what happens. Fox cannot possibly want to renew this.

Yesterday, the Hallmark Channel ran the Sarah, Plain and Tall trilogy. I recorded this as I have always been curious as to what these movies are all about, given the participation of Glenn Close and Christopher Walken. I watched the first two last night, and have to say that they were very nice family oriented movies that made its points in a gentile and kind way. Walken was very good in the film as was Glenn Close. I will be watching the third film this afternoon. Hallmark Channel reruns these films all the time, so there will be plenty of opportunities to catch them.

Not a bad way to send Easter Sunday, watching Sarah Plain and Tall. Though, I would never call Glenn Close plain, tall yes, not not plain.

Oh well.

American Chopper: The beginning of the end

So last night, via DVR, I watched the season 6 premiere of American Chopper, the episode where Sr. fires Jr. There were two bike builds, one for the NHL and one based on the B3 bomber for Northrop corporation, the company that makes them.

We start off with Sr. talking to the workforce about tough times and that layoffs may need to happen to trim the fat away. Mikey is right there, who basically just does PR work and is the comedy relief for the show, wonder if his job is in jeopardy. A weak attempt at foreshadowing.

Next, the bikes, never got a good look at the NHL bike, Sr. and Jason Pohl (computer geek who designs bikes and for some bizarre reason is out in the shop helping to build them) put them together, Sr. is eyeballing things and cannot figure out things are not level. Jason gets Jr. to help who is using a laser level to work things out. Sr. calls him a know it all and claims that things do not have to be precise. Kind of wondering what the NHL who spent at least $100,000 for that bike would say after seeing that.

Then we have the big moment where Sr confronts Jr. about coming in constantly late and waves a one page contract at him showing where he needs to be in at 7 am. Chief designer and fabricator who owns 10% of the company and his contract is one page? And it is filled with what time he is supposed to be working at the shop? There have been shows where Jr. is at the shop till one am finishing bike builds. Sr. comes and goes as he pleases, but that is okay, he is the boss. So after a few minutes of screaming, Jr. gets fired and storms out.

Gee, I wonder if a lawyer would be able to help Jr. sue for unfair dismissal. Mikey comes to his Dad and in a moment of extreme clarity asks, did you think this through?

Then Sr. sits with the OCC brain trust to discuss how that can sell dealerships internationally and bring some new money into the company. They sit in front of a map and draw circles around countries like South Africa saying we have a lot of fans there, let's sell dealerships to that country. Gee, I kind of think it takes a tad more to sell dealerships than that effort. Especially since you just fired your chief designer who made your brand so popular that a demand for your bikes was created.

Oh, they have a big European tour coming up, through England, Scotland, and Ireland. Not really sure I would call that European, but hey OCC must know what they are doing.

The B2 bomber bike is next on the show, the first bike Jr. did not have anything to do with. Rick and Jason came up with a really neat looking gas tank, too bad the soap opera took so much time, would have been nice to see how it was made. But you know, you can tell Jr. was not involved with this bike build, the tank looked great, but the rest of the bike did not fit with that tank. It did not have the sleek clean lines that Jr. would have insisted on.

Next week the Teutuls are going to a therapist to iron our their problems. So less bike stuff and more comedy soap opera. I do have to say I am curious to see how this ends up.

Do I believe Jr. is fired and no longer associated with OCC? No. Do I believe he really wants to start his own business and be his own boss? No to the first part and yes to the second part. For the most part, he is his own boss with OCC until we get these BS melodramatics to boost the ratings.

American Chopper was good when it first started, you had guys like Jr., Vinnie, Cody, Rick, and Christian working on bikes, showing how design, fabrication, and paint came together. Sr. and Mikey would do some comedy, sometimes Sr. would get together with 3-4 other guys and build a bike. That was okay. Now Vinnie and Cody left to Vinnie's V-Force Customs to do his own thing. You have a computer geek who has no clues of what to do in the shop, building bikes. Now Jr. is supposedly gone.

Discovery Channel saw the writing on the walls, ratings were starting to decline, but still good enough for their sister channel TLC. Now this show is ready to be cancelled and the Teutuls with OCC to go back to the obscurity from which they came.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 10-April-2009

Today is Good Friday and when I was growing up, my mother would not let us have any meat, instead we got fish sticks. Usually I go out of my way to eat a nice steak or some other piece of meat today, but it did not work out this year.

American Chopper started its new season last night and the big talk on the Internet is that Senior fired Junior from the company. Of course Junior supposedly owns 10% of the company so I don't know what being fired means. Sounds like a staged fight to give this show a ratings boost. On the official OCC website, Junior's picture is still there and he will still be on American Chopper.

American Chopper was interesting when they showed you how bikes were made. We got to see how parts were chromed, and what powder coating was all about. Once they exhausted the topics that they can cover, it has become just boring comedy. TLC should pull the plug.

The Eleventh Hour season finale made the top 20 list at number 20 according to the latest Entertainment Weekly. Should bode well for a renewal.

Also by surfing the net, I discovered that Kal Penn (who played Kutner on House) is joining Obama's administration by taking a job in the White House Office of Public Liaison. That explains the suicide, he needed to be written out of the show. I liked his character a lot and he did a really good job on House. Good luck in the White House.

Lie to Me and Bones will be on Fox's summer schedule as reported by the Futon Critic. This looks good for a renewal for both shows. Let's hope so.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has the season finale tonight, during which we get an extended look at the Christian Bale Terminator movie that is coming out this summer. TV.com has speculated that if the movie does well, this show may get renewed.

To the powers that be at Fox TV. Renew Lie to Me and Bones and please cancel the Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse.

Oh well.

TV's Dead Zones

I keep seeing those Verizon commercials talking about dead zones. It seems that this could apply to the TV networks and the time spots where they send shows to die.

ABC has Wednesday at 10 pm, have they had any shows succeed at the time? Eyes, The Evidence, Life on Mars, and Invasion all died at that time. Even Lost did poorly at that time. Not looking good for The Unusuals.

CBS has Tuesday at 10 pm. Smith, Cane, and Without a Trace all have died or soon will die at that time spot.

Fox, 8-10 pm Friday night, there is a graveyard for shows. Justice, Canterbury's Law, and Prison Break have been sent there to die. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Files and Dollhouse both will be dead at that time.

CW any night but Thursday. Do they have any hits? NBC, I cannot even guess as I can not think of a top 20 show on that network.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 08-April-2009

UConn Lady Huskies won the NCAA tournament last night and finished their season undefeated. I guess the bumper stickers will come out "UConn where men are men and women are champions". Being a Penn State fan, I just laugh at that.

Looks like my blog got spammed by Reaper fans trying to save the show. I never saw this be particularly successful, especially with the CW (former WB and UPN). I remember someone was trying to save Jack and Bobby and started a similar campaign, did not help. Too bad, because Reaper has improved this season.

And the CW is going to be putting on two new reality shows on this summer, just what we need, more RTC (reality TV crap).

Oh well.

Thoughts: 07-April-2009

North Carolina wins the NCAA tournament, which means that Penn State did the Big Ten proud by winning the NIT. I doubt many of the other Big Ten schools will be acknowledging that.

Latest L Word Interrogation Tape is with Max who reveals that when Jenny broke up with him, he/she used her toothbrush to scrub the bathroom. Looks like Sgt Duffy to back to being a therapist, will we ever get a fraking answer as to who killed Jenny?

On House last night, Cutler killed himself is a surprise move. Nobody saw it and at one point House thought he was murdered since he did not detect any suicidal behaviors from Cutler. I like his character, and he was murdered by the fraking writers.

TV.com has a list of ten shows in danger of cancellation. Too no surprise, Fox Friday Night bore made the list (Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse). Reaper was also on the list. I was surprised to see Law and Order not on the list.

Oh well.

Magazines: The Left, the Right, and the Libertarian

I am a magazine junkie, having about 70 magazine subscriptions on all different topics. Today, I thought I would survey the political spectrum of magazines for you. You can find them on the web if you want to subscribe to any.

The Left

The Nation: Founded in 1865, this is the oldest liberal magazine around, tends to be pretty far left/socialist. I remember that there was a big scandal when the published some excerpts of Gerald Ford's autobiography which covered his pardon of Nixon. Bit too far to the left for me.

The Progressive: Founded in 1909 by Senator Robert M LaFollette Sr., pretty far to the left also. A big news item with this publication is that they tried to publish an article on how to make an atomic bomb based on research done in the public library. Finally got to publish the article, now you can get the same information on the Internet. A little too far to the left for me.

The New Republic: Founded in 1914, the magazine tends to be center to left in orientation. This depends on the editor, Michael Kinsley was the editor, tended to be liberal, then Andrew Sullivan became the editor and moved more to the right. I had subscriptions previously to this magazine, and since John Stossel was recommending it in Reason, I decided to give it another try.

The Washington Monthly: Founded in 1969 by Charles Peter, a New Deal Democrat, this is a magazine for neoliberals and was the starting group for a lot of liberal political commentators. Peter tends to worship JFK and Camelot, and still tends to use that view to evaluate the current political scene. I find this magazine to be a tad out of touch.

Mother Jones: Founded in 1976 this is the most popular of the liberal publications based on circulation. I remember their big article on the tendency of Ford Pintos to exploded when rear ended that put them on the map. Also, I remember them hiring Michael Moore to be their editor and when he was fired, he sued and got a settlement which he used to finance Roger and Me. This is not a bad publication for the liberal view point.

In These Times: Also founded in 1976 is this socialist/liberal publication that comes out of Chicago. Again, a tad too far left for me.

The American Prospect: Founded in 1990, this magazine focuses on intellectual liberalism to counter a similar tide of conservatism that came out in the 1990's. Stossel also recommended this publication in Reason, so I will be checking it out once again. I used to read it years ago, cannot remember why I stopped.

Liberal Opinion Week: I do not know when this publication started, it is a weekly reprint of the liberal editorial writers that appear in the newspapers. Its sister publication is Conservative Chronicle. It is useful to get a diverse collection of opinions in one spot.

The Right

Human Events: Founded in 1944, this is the oldest conservative publication. Ronald Reagan was a regular reader and would sometimes based his decisions on what this publication was promoting. Never read this.

National Review: Founded by Willaim F. Buckley Jr. in 1955, this is the magazine of conservatism that inspired a lot of people. I like its balance in presenting its views and found it very useful to read. Another publication recommended by Stossel.

The American Spectator: Founded in 1967 by R. Emmett Tyrell Jr., this is an irrelevant and very funny magazine that pokes at liberals and their views. Clinton's Troopergate scandal was presented here, which lead to Paula Jones' 15 minutes of fame. A lot of folks hate this publication, I like it.

The Weekly Standard: This was started in 1995 and I never have read a copy of it. I know that Fred Barnes is published in this magazine, and it loses money.

The American Conservative: Founded in 2002 by Pat Buchanan, Scott McConnell, and Taki Theodoracopulos. Buchanan has articles published but no longer runs the editorial side. I find the point of view to be too isolationist for my tastes.

Conservative Chronicle: Similar to Liberal Opinion Week, in that the leading conservative editorial writers are gathered together.

The Libertarian

Reason: Founded in 1968, this is the leading journal of libertarian thought and I as a libertarian find it very valuable. A great publication with lots of thought provoking articles.

Liberty: Founded in 1987, tends to be a tad too radical for my tastes but has some interesting libertarian perspectives.

These publications should be easy to find at Borders, Barnes and Noble, or in NYC, the UNS shops. Also, you can find websites for them all.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 05-April-2009

UConn lost to Michigan State yesterday. No double NCAA championships for UConn this year. I guess we will be seeing the bumper stickers again which state UConn where men are men and women are champions.

My mother watches two soap operas, As the World Turns and Guiding Light. GL is ending on Sept 18 after 72 years as a radio and TV show. I never understood the appeal of soap operas, the stories are pretty dopey, and the characters exhibit so much passion for each other, only to find a few months later that they are now into someone else. I had a roommate in college who scheduled his classes around General Hospital, the storyline at that time was everyone was trying to get hold of a statue named the Ice Princess.

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly had a two page article on Supernatural. Finally, they are publishing stuff on shows that I watch. It appears that the actors and producers only want to do one more season. This show has been so on target since the first episode, that it may be a good idea to go out on top and then maybe do a movie later.

I watched Friday Night Lights last night via DVR, what a heart breaker that they lost the state championship game. Next week is the season finale, I had thought it was this week. Should be interesting the set up for the next season, especially with the creation of East Dillon High. That school will need a football coach, I wonder who that might be.

Eleventh Hour had a great season finale, I loved how Hood stared down that ass wipe deputy director at the end as he got arrested. Did that idiot really think he could outwit Hood? The final scene with Hood and his partner Rachel was very nice end to the season. This show needs to be renewed.

Oh well.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dollhouse, and Reaper

Three shows that I would like to comment on after watching them last night, thanks to my DVR.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (SCC) is near the end of its run with the season finale to be aired next Friday. Brian Austin Green who plays Derek Reese, John Connor's uncle, gets killed by a terminator when turning a corner in a house. Just like that he is dead. Last week Charley Dixon, played by Dean Winter (who is such a good actor in shows like Oz, Sex and the City, CSI: Miami) got killed fending off an attack in order to give John time to get away. At least his death has some meaning.

Why kill Derek? Was it to show that anything can happen on SCC and that anybody can get killed? At least on shows like Lost, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel, death occurred that meant something, not just a throw away like in SCC. And the characters that are getting killed in SCC are the interesting ones, not the bland boring characters that stay alive. Next week is the last episode for this season and I am betting the last in the series.

The first Terminator movie made sense, a last ditch effort by the machines to win stopped by the man who is to become John's father. If no other movies were made, John would grow up and lead the Resistance to victory and the time traveling bit would have ended after they sent Kyle Reese back to the past. Perfect film that now has been ruined by movie sequels and the TV series.

Though I did read in the latest issue of The Philosopher's Magazine that the first film could not have happened the way it did because the Terminator having gone first would have succeeded because no matter how soon Kyle Reese was sent back, logically would not be able to stop the Terminator since he was the first to travel back in time.

Last night's Dollhouse showed what is wrong with Whedon's series. Echo recovers her memory to a point where she tries to break the other dolls out. She confronts the head scientist (who is very unconvincing in the role) and demands an explanation for how they could do this to people. He claims that they are the good guys, that they do lots of good with the Dollhouse, and that when her contract is up, she will leave with tons of money and memories of all the fun she had.

Huh? Dude, you are running a high priced cat house for pervert rich guys who want to have their way with compliant women. What fraking good are you doing? There was an episode of Buffy which took place during Season 6, where the Terrible Trio had an ex girlfriend brainwashed to be their sex slave. She comes out of it right when they are arranging a tryst with her in a sexy French maid's outfit. She screams at them that they are perverted rapists and should go to jail.

This is what is going on in Dollhouse, brainwashed women who go out as high priced call girls made to do whatever the buyer wants and it is okay since they get mind wiped and will have a bunch of cash waiting for them when their contract is over. This is Whedon's idea of a great series? If this crap gets renewed, there is no fraking justice in the world.

So after watching two hours of crap, I watched Reaper on my DVR. This show is starting to get better and better. Tyler Labine as Sock had a very funny bit with his Asian stepsister (who is very sexy indeed). And Ben is the unsung brains of the group, last night he comes up with the idea of baptising the baby to keep her out of the Devil's hands. And Morgan, the Devil's other son, is revealing that there is more to him then what we thought.

It was like a breath of fresh air. This show needs to get renewed after the major improvement over the last couple of episodes. You really appreciate this show after watching two hours of Fox Friday night crap.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 03-April-2009

Penn State beat Baylor last night to win the NIT. Great job and kudos to the men's basketball
team.

While watching Smallville and Supernatural on the CW last night, I was informed that the next new episodes will not be until April 23. Why? Ratings sweep or do they just want to piss off their fan base? I never understand how and why the networks schedule things.

Pushing Daisies Season 2 is coming to DVD in July. I guess that ABC will be telecasting the last three episodes before then. Another great show that never found its audience.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 02-April-2009

I forgot until last night to check Showtime.com for the latest L Word Interrogation Tape. This week we have Niki who reveals that she stole the copy of Les Girls because it is a terrible film and will kill her career if released. She hid it in Jenny's attic figuring nobody would find it there and if they do, they will blame Jenny and she would get payback on her. Finally, the police get some real information that sheds some light on what happened the night Jenny was killed. Maybe future tapes will follow this trend.

Lost had a good episode last night that sheds some light on why Ben is the evilest man on earth. Maybe Locke will kill him next week. Lost is the kind of show that will live forever in DVD and reruns as new generations find it.

Lie to Me was also good too, Tim Roth is really very good in that role. Let's up Fox renews this show.

Like the last issue of The Sporting News, this week's Sports Illustrated has become the New York Yankee Monthly. There MLB preview picks the Yankees to win it all. What a bunch of bias BS, it is going to be some much more satisfying when the Red Sox win it all this year.

Oh well.

Thought: 01-April-2009

Everyday is April Fool's Day for me.

Penn State beat Notre Dame last night and will get to play Baylor on Thursday for the NIT championship. This is a big boost to Penn State's program and to Head Coach Ed DeChellis who seems to have this program on the right track. Now, we need to spread the word about what a great place State College is, in order to get the recruiting needed to take the next step.

In the comic strip Pickles, the joke this week is that the main characters are wearing Snuggies. I saw the ad for these during the Christmas holiday, my mom was complaining how they are open in the back and that would make her cold. I actually order one, the deluxe edition with 50% more fleece and pockets. I have to say, they are pretty warm and my back did not get cold.

The Eleventh Hour season finale is on Thursday night. The last two episodes made it into the top 20 list, so if this episode does, I am hoping that the show gets renewed for another season.

I hate reality TV crap (RTC). Besides seeing commercials constantly for these shows, the only time I watch any of it, is usually the last five minutes before the show I want to see comes on. I remember this show that Richard Branson did where people were competing to for something to do with him. Two people were picked at the end, one to go home. They interview the two, and this guy was saying how all he wanted was for Richard to know him and what he was all about, that was the goal he wanted to accomplish. I was thinking, Branson is going to forget all about you five seconds after you get booted off, what a frakking moron.

Oh well.
