Thoughts: 28-March-2010

Today is Palm Sunday the start of Holy Week. Easter is here, spring is here, and the Lent fasts will soon be over. I am waiting for some friends of mine to take me out for my 50th birthday (that was on Jan. 29) and one of them gave up meat on Fridays which is the only day they seem to be free to go out.

Marvel cancelled Spider-Woman with issue 7. I did not even know that until I read that issue last night. A great book gone, but we have about 4 ongoing Deadpool books and coming soon 4 Avengers books. What is Marvel thinking?

South Park (Comedy Central): I just watched the latest episode online where they bust up Catcher in the Rye, one of the most overrated books ever written. Trey and Stone hit is dead on and this show is still fresh and good after 13 season. A

The latest issue of The Lutheran had a report that CORE (a great formed to protest the recent decisions on allowing gays in committed partnerships serve as ordained ministers) is organizing the North American Lutheran Church to accommodate those congregations leaving the ELCA because of the sexuality decision. Whenever I read any of CORE's propaganda, I am reminded of the Churches in the South that left their parent organizations because of their condemnation of slavery. I fear that years from now, folks will be looking at CORE the same way.

Thoughts: 27-March-2010

Marvel is going to put out a fourth Avengers ongoing title, which means my hopes that they were going away from multiple character books was unfounded. Avengers Academy is the fourth book to join The Avengers, The Secret Avengers, and the New Avengers. Why even bother cancelling the books in the first place?

Next week, CBS is revising the viewing order on Thursday night of The Mentalist and CSI, which means that I will not be able to watch the Mentalist as it is not available on Demand. Fringe I can watch on Hulu, I guess I will have to check out CBS.com to watch the show. Why do they have to do that?

24, according to TheFutonCritic is ending with this season. NBC will not be picking up the series after all, my guess is that Sutherland wants to get the 24 movie franchise going. The way this season is going, I think that will be the best thing for the show. Jack Bauer needs to get on the big screen.

Perez Hilton did a promo for the Naked News which he called himself the original gossip "gangsta". For some reason I never thought of him using the word before and doubt that I ever will.

Thoughts: 21-March-2010

I watched my DVD copy of Tremors last night, what a great film. Ron Underwood did a great job in directing this film and it reminds me a lot of Jaws in that both he and Steven Spielberg really showed a great appreciation for the monster films of the 1950's and 1960's. Both movies are an excellent homage to those films. I plan on watching the next two films in the series today to prepare for the Tremors: the Series DVD set that I just got.

The Pacific (HBO): I just watched Part 1 via on Demand and this miniseries looks as good as Band of Brothers. Very good cinematography and very well done. I look forward to catching more episodes. A

Secret Diary of a Call Girl (Showtime): I started watching this series because Billie Piper was the star and I was curious to see how she would handle this role after being on Doctor Who. I guess we have come a long way since Katy Manning who played Jo Grant posed nude with a Dalek in Girls Illustrated. Piper does a very good job and does appear to use a body double in the more graphic sex scenes. Just finished the third season and it is not a bad show. Check it out. B

Lots of upsets in the NCAA tournament, I have a friend at work who told me his bracket picks got busted after Day 1. At least four major upsets happened. The last time I got excited about this tournament was when I was in grad school and decided to watch the final game between Georgetown and Villonova. What an exciting game, well worth watching. Too bad basketball games usually fail to live up to that level of excitement.

So the three new Avengers books coming out from Marvel will be entitled, The Avengers, The Secret Avengers, and the New Avengers. Thanks Marvel, let's continue this trend of multiple books per character. There also appears to be a couple more Spider-Man books coming out. I am just going to stick with the main book, I cannot support this trend any more.'

Thought:s: 20-March-2010

The first day of spring and we got a beautiful day here in Southeastern CT. I got all my laundry done and have the rest of the weekend to myself.

I just read in the Comic Shop News (free paper that I get with my Midtown comics package each week) that we are going to have three ongoing Avengers titles from Marvel. There goes my hope that they would cut back on doing multiple titles for the same book. Black Widow gets her own ongoing book and I see that Iron Man will get a second ongoing book. Oh brother, why?

I have been watching a lot of History International, which appears to be where all the shows I used to watch on the History Channel went to. History's Mysteries for example, a nice little show. Over on the History Channel, we get Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men, and MonsterQuest.

I have a hankering to watch Tremors and plan on doing so this weekend. A great little film that spawned three direct to DVD films and a 13 episode TV series on the SyFy Channel back when it was Sci Fi.

Last week, the Weekly Standard had a nice write up on Analog Science Fiction and Fact, currently the longest continuously published SF magazine. Only three editors for its 80 year run, John Campbell, Ben Bova, and the current editor, Stanley Schmidt. I just cancelled my subscription as I am trying to cut back on magazines. Analog features hard SF and has had some pretty good stories over the years. Campbell was a SF giant who influenced and nurtured lots of great writers. Schmidt currently publishes a blend of new and old writers and I have to say that I was glad to see the Weekly Standard give a nice review to this publication. I will pick up a copy next time I see it on the newsstands.

Of course I still say that the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction still is the best for overall high quality of fiction. And it is the second oldest SF publication.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 19-March-2010

My new laptop came in a week early, I cannot believe how quick Dell delivered it to me. I am getting used to it and have used a easy transfer cable to send all my documents over to it. So far so good, just have to get used to the keyboard. It is much faster than my old system, Farmville goes by very fast now.

24 (Fox): I saw the new episode this past week and was very impressed, was the best of the season so far. I did not see that major twist coming, these terrorists are a bit smarter than the previous bunches that went after Jack. I also hope that the lame subplot with the parole officer is over, bring back Dim Kim and the cougar, that was far more entertaining. A

Human Target (Fox): I cannot say enough good things about this show, great episode and Fox needs to renew this. A

Oh well.

Thoughts: 14-March-2010

Yesterday I mentioned the annoying and irritating character that Marv Wolfman created for Teen Titans and with a little Internet searching, I found out who he was. Danny Chase aka Phantasm (so irritating that when he did get a costumed identity, it had to be recycled in the Batman film, Mask of Phantasm) who was so hated by the fans, that he was killed off. Marvel, do not make this mistake with Amadeus Cho.

I hate Daylight Savings Time, especially now where we lose an hour's sleep. Why do we keep doing this stupid time change? As far as I can see it has outlived its purpose.

Fox: I watch several shows on Fox and I do note that not many new shows seem to survive for multiple seasons.

House: I started watching this because I had see Hugh Laurie's work in Jeeves and Wooster and was curious how he would do in this dramatic role. What a good actor, and while the show has gone down a bit in the past few seasons, this season, it appears to be back on track.

24: I watched the first couple of seasons on DVD, one season over a weekend at a time. I never could understand how folks could wait several weeks between episodes, at least now Fox is showing the show each week. This could be the last season for the show, but I just saw on CNN that NBC may be interested in picking it up if Fox drops it.

Bones: I started watching the show because David Boreanaz from Angel was starring in it and have come to appreciated Emily Deschanel in the show and their chemistry together.

Human Target: I really like this show and Mark Valley is great, I hope that Fox renews this.

Lie to Me: Another show that I like that will return in June and I hope that Fox renews this. Tim Roth is very good and there was some Internet chatter about a Bones and Lie to Me cross-over.

Fringe: Fox better renew this show, it is that good and a favorite of mine.

ABC: Lots of soap opera type shows on this network make up my regular viewing list. And of course, a few that I started watching got killed due to poor ratings.

Desperate Housewives: I started watching this show because I liked Teri Hatcher from Lois and Clark and enjoy the comedy. I still do not care too much for the five year jump, but at least the show is still watchable.

Lost: Final season and I have to say I am starting to get tired of all the slow reveals of the mysteries.

Grey's Anatomy: I like Sandra Oh which is why I started watching this show, which can be a chore as it really gets kind of implausible at times.

Private Practice: I watch this show as it is a spin off of Grey's Anatomy and there are cross-overs every season. It is a show that I can really bitch about to the extent that I wonder why I watch it. My least favorite show on this list, and I pray that ABC cancels it.

CBS: The network that I watch the most.

Cold Case: I caught episodes in reruns and starting watching it this year. A pretty flimsy premise that they pull off.

CSI: Miami: Started watching this show for Emily Proctor and I have to say that I like the way David Caurso plays Caine. Too cool and reminds me of John Woo's Hard Target character that Jean Claude Van Dame played.

NCIS: My sister hooked me onto to this show, and while I do not care for the goofy Tony character, he is starting to grow on me.

NCIS: Los Angeles: Not a bad spin off of NCIS and with less goofiness.

The Good Wife: So far not a bad show that is sure to get renewed, a show that got CBS a winner at Tuesday 10 pm, previously a dead zone for CBS. Of course it helps that NBC pulled Law & Order SVU from that time slot for the failed Jay Leno experiment.

CSI: NY: I was watching all of the CSI shows at this point and I really like Melina Kanakaredes.

CSI: I still remember how everyone thought the remake of The Fugitive (Friday 8 pm) was going to be a big hit and not much was expected of CSI which followed.

The Mentalist: Simon Baker really makes this show work.

Ghost Whisperer: Jennifer Love Hewitt and low cut outfits, she knows why I watch this show and delivers.

History Channel: The only shows that I watch on a regular basis are MonsterQuest and MysteryQuest where every so often a really good episode appears. But not that often.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 13-March-2010

Rain, rain, and more rain today in CT.

I just found out that Marvel cancelled Incredible Hercules with issue141. There was a rumor on the Internet back in Dec. that the book would end with issue 150, looks like they were off by nine issues. Two limited series will cover the final story arcs of these series. I liked it well enough, but Amadeus Cho is starting to get a bit irritating, just like that character Nightwing/Dick Grayson befriended in Teen Titans.

I forgot to mention Southland on my TNT list. Very good show and I liked the first episode of the new season. I think that the show is on a better network than NBC. A

Private Practice (ABC), with American Chopper (TLC) and Dollhouse (Fox) getting cancelled, I have only one bad and irritating show to watch, good old Private Practice where these 40 some doctors act like kids in middle school. Addison kissed Sam my ex husband, shame on you says Naomi who is floating between two men. The only thing that I like on the show is that Sheldon and Charlotte are getting together, and sending a big frakk you to Cooper, the most unattractive and unappealing man on TV today. D

NBC: I only watch a couple of shows on this network, most of what I liked has disappeared.

Heroes: After season 1 this show went downhill, and I do not know what I still bother watching it.

Law & Order: Still one of the best shows on TV.

Friday Night Lights: Coming to an end soon and new episodes have already been shown on Direct TV, I think that Kyle Chandler is a very good actor who deserves a big hit show.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 08-March-2010

I have in the past attempted to pick Oscar winners, this year I really could not get into it. I did not watch the telecast, lots easier to look up the winners on the Internet. Pretty much the favorites as proclaimed by Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide won. I thought that The Hurt Locker would win over Avatar, someone on a message board claimed that Avatar made too much money not to win. My thought on that was, when did Oscar care about box office?

Sandra Bullock won thanks to the media push and her publicists who should get a big bonus. Most folks thought Meryl Streep should have won, the consolation here is Bullock like Julia Roberts will go the way of Doris Day. Day was the most popular actress of her day, did great business at the box office, and nobody can name a single movie of hers. History will prove out here.

The only surprise was that White Ribbon did not win best foreign picture. That film was getting rave reviews, what won was a film I was not familiar with, El Secreto de Sus Ojos.

I forgot to mention yesterday that two trailers that preceded Alice in Wonderland, caught my attention. The remake of The Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and Will and Jada Smith's kid looked interesting. Chan is not teaching this kid the wimpy crane style but some kick ass kung fu. It is set in Beijing, China and I think Chan is going to be looking pretty good in this film.

The other movie was The Sorcerer's Apprentice, a Disney film starring Nicholas Cage as a sorcerer who is training an apprentice to take over the fight against evil. It has a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe, and Cage may be taking a page from Johnny Depp's playbook.

Now back to my network TV show survey.

CW: I am giving this network a lot more credit than it is due. I mostly watched the WB offerings and never found the UPN shows to be that good. I am only currently watching two shows on this network, which when they are cancelled will most likely see me gone as a CW viewer.

Smallville: Just got renewed for a tenth season, this is a WB original. Tom Welling really makes this show, have to give him a lot of credit, now he just needs to find the right movie role.

Supernatural: Another WB original, this will be back next year and is one of the best shows on TV.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 07-March-2010

I just sent for a new computer from Dell. A laptop with Windows 7, my desktop that I purchased about 6 years ago still uses Window XP and is very slow. I cannot believe that I can upgrade to a better computer for half the price I paid 6 years ago.

I saw Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton. I am a big Burton film buff and despite all the negative reviews that I read, loved this movie. I liked the Cheshire Cat, who is my favorite character in the book and thought that Johnny Depp was good. I enjoyed the overall look and feel of the film, I give it an A.

I read the DC limited series, Justice League of America: Cry for Justice. I tend to wait until I get all the issues of a limited series and read them in one sitting. Not too impressed, seems like a big excuse to maim Red Arrow, kill his kid, and let Green Arrow kill the villain responsible in order to set the stage for a big redirection for the characters. Alan Moore did in best in the Killing Joke when he had the Joker cripple Barbara Gordon turning her from Batgirl to Oracle. Cry for Justice seem just a tad too graticule and a bit of a bore. C

I thought that I might start going network by network and talk about the shows I watch. Let's start with the cable networks.

TNT: I tend to watch a lot of the shows on this network, for the most part I find them to be of very high quality.

The Closer: A gem.

Saving Grace: Coming to an end, but exceptionally good. I cannot believe that poor DVD sales and European ratings killed this show.

HawthoRNe: Pretty bad Jada Pinkett Smith vehicle, I still do not understand how this got renewed while Raising the Bar did not. Bit of a fantasy where nurses seem to get to boss doctors around.

Leverage: I love this show.

Dark Blue: Average show that I was surprised to see get renewed. How can these cops stay undercover with no criminal figuring it out.

FX: Some pretty good shows on here, most that I watch have ended.

Damages: This show deserves better ratings, one of the best shows on TV.

USA: Another cable network with lots of good shows.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent: I like this show and I think it may have gotten better on USA.

In Plain Sight: Another good show.

Psych: Very funny, my sister turned me on to this.

White Collar: Like Leverage on TNT, I like these type of shows with cons and con men.

Burn Notice: I cannot understand why the critics do not like Jeffery Donovan who is so good in this show. Bruce Campbell and Gabrielle Anwar are also very good.

Royal Pains: I loved this show and cannot believe the long wait for the next season.

SyFy: What used to be the Sci Fi Channel has a couple of good shows.

Warehouse 13: This show really grew on me after the first episode, looking forward to the next season.

Sanctuary: Another good show.

Eureka: What a great show from a relativity simple premise.

Next time, I hit the big Five networks.

Oh well.

Thoughts: 06-March-2010

It has been a while since I wrote my last blog. I have been obsessing with Farmville on Facebook as I try to get one million coins. Also, work has been very stressful as our new management hits us with off sites and negative pep talks. I also got hit with writing two study reports due by the end of the month, and have to waste a lot of time getting templates, macros, and formatting classes done before I can start writing the frakking thing. And of course nobody in our lab has ever written a study report, so I am relying on one person who is a great resource but creates a lot of anxiety in me every time I talk to him in regards to pitfalls with the report system.

Nip/Tuck (FX) had its series finale and went out not with a bang but a whimper. Sean heads off to Europe to work with some orphanage with kids in need of medical help while taking care of a kid with leprosy. Christian continues his life and found a Kimber clone to hit on. Matt is off with Eva and his perfect child he had with Kimber to start a life. Julie is off to London to marry a Duke. No Carver and a very boring way to end a boring finale season. My suggestion is to stick to the first several seasons when they were in Miami, after going to LA the series went downhill.
A for the Miami season, F for this show and this season.

Burn Notice (USA) had its season finale this week and will be returning this June. Nice way of ending the show and as always very high quality. A

Desperate Housewives (ABC), Julie Benz who is playing the gay stripper, did it with Katherine (Dana Delany) in the last episode. I have to say that I am still amazed that I never noticed what a hot body Benz had in Buffy, Angel, and Dexter. It will be interesting to see whether this will be allowed to play out. A

Marvel, to my disappointment, is putting out a second ongoing Avengers book, entitled Secret Avengers. When will they learn about killing the goose that laid the golden eggs? You do not need multiple ongoing books, they are currently killing Deadpool with that concept.

As we wait for DC to start its Brightest Day line, and to see how the return of Bruce Wayne will be handled in the Batman Titles, I note that a new ongoing will be featuring Zatanna. Might be interesting as she has always been a supporting character and only had one limited series devoted to her that costarred John Constantine. I am looking forward to reading that series.

I am off to see Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland today, he is a favorite director of mine and I am looking forward to checking it out.

Oh well.
