Thoughts: 26-February-2010

I saw in this week's TV Guide that Saving Grace (TNT) only has nine episodes left. I did not know that show was ending. I kind of like it and look forward to seeing how they resolve everything. I also have to give some kudos to Holly Hunter for taking a role that requires an actor to really expose herself both physically and mentally.

The other night on the Biography channel, they reran a documentary entitled Behind the Planet of the Apes. This was made before Roddy McD0well's death and the Tim Burton film. I did not realize that the studio cut the budget on the sequels dropping from 6 to 3 to 1.7 million as the films were made. And these films made some big money for 20th Century Fox. I always wondered why the second movie, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, had such a cheap made for TV look about it.

Desperate Housewives (ABC) had a nice episode where Julie Benz who plays the stripper who moved into the neighborhood has an encounter with each one of the housewives. Nicely done and Benz really has a dynamite body which I never noticed before when I watched her on Buffy, Angel, and Dexter. I also like the interplay between her and Dana Delany, Katherine has not been used very well this season. A

21-February-2010

I saw Shutter Island yesterday. Director was Martin Scorsese, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, and Michelle Williams. I thought it was very well done, had a nice twist to the story, and contrary to the critics, I did not find it to be too long. Good story, great acting, and I give it an overall A.

The last three films that I have seen in the theaters, Sherlock Holmes, The Wolfman, and Shutter Island, has revived my faith that good movies are still being made and are worth going to the theaters to see. Of course, we still see these remakes like the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street, that just re shoots scenes from the original film. The trailer had at least three scenes were were directly lifted from the original.

Private Practice (ABC) had another doozy of a crapfest episode. First the wedding of Maya, to her fifteen year old baby daddy. Now this smart girl raised by two doctors, one who is an expert in fertility treatments, never thought to use birth control in her first sexual encounter. Then no one suggests adoption as a viable option for her kid? This episode had a multiracial couple lose their baby after trying so hard, would they not be good parents for Maya's multiracial daughter? And the wedding, what an embarrassment to praise Maya and Dink (whose real name was only used once and I cannot remember it) for getting married then going off to college while their parents deal with the raising of the kid. What is this, story lines from the WB/CW sitcom Reba? Who knew that show had that much influence? Then the whole Sam/Addison relationship, she cannot sleep with Sam because it would hurt Naomi, but she can sleep with Pete totally disregarding Sam's feelings? Who writes this stuff? At least it looks like Charlotte and Cooper may be get back together, after Cooper exposed her boyfriend's drug problem (played by Nip/Tuck's The Carver). This show gets worst and worst. F

I cancelled my subscription to Sports Illustrated after they made a hated Yankee Sportsman of the Year. While Jeter is the only Yankee I can respect, coming off their World Series win was too much for this diehard Red Sox fan to take. So I noticed their Winter Olympic preview issue the other day in the company break room and saw on their cover a very suggestive photo of Lindsey Vonn on the cover. She was in a skin tight ski suit posed in a bent over ski position that was also very sexually suggestive. In the magazine, they had several photos of her in skimpy athletic wear working out. Now I know sex sells and at least she won a gold medal, but come on already. I never saw Bonnie Blair in those kind of poses.

Thoughts: 20-February-2010

It has been a while since I was inspired to write my blog. Work has been crazy this week, it seems the new mantra is to have meeting after meeting to talk about what we should be doing, instead of just frakking doing it. Next week we have an all day off site to do team building, what a frakking waste of time.

Supernatural (CW) has been renewed for a sixth season, though the creator Eric Kripke, will not be returning as the producer. Good news is one of his assistants moves up to take the job, so I am hoping the show's quality will not be diminished. Smallville on the other hand, has not been officially renewed yet, which is causing some speculation that this could be the last season.

Leverage (TNT) had an excellent season finale this past week, with the good news that it will be returning this summer. Very good show. A

Dick Francis, a famous mystery writer who wrote his books around the horse racing world, passed away. I used to read a lot of his books when I was younger and always found him to be a good read.

Nip/Tuck (FX) continues on its mediocre journey to the show's end. I really do not think that they know what to do with this show anymore. I see that old characters are returning, I wonder if the Carver will be back? I note that the actor who pays him has been showing up in a lot of shows as a guest star, will we see a return of the Carver? D

Thoughts: 14-February-2010

Well, today is Valentine's Day, which I think is designed to depress us single folk who will be alone this day. Come to think of it, almost ever holiday seems to exist to create depression in people.

House (Fox) had a very nice Cuddy episode this past week. I have to say given how much is on her plate in doing that job, House seems like even a bigger jerk when he distracts her with his petty crap. Good show and it really fleshed out who Lisa Cuddy is. A

American Chopper (TLC) comes to an end with a whimper this past week. Clearly the producers did not expect the show to get cancelled as this was a very lackluster ending. OCC opens a barbecue OCC themed restaurant in Kansas City, would love to know how that is going given the fine barbecue places already there. Sr moans how his kids are not there and how they don't want to be part of the business anymore, gee I kind of think you pretty move drove them away. I also note the big photos of both Mikey and Jr that were on display, hopefully they are getting a piece of that pie for use of their photos. They built a bike for Kobalt tools which their clients pretty much designed for them, guess they did not want to take a chance on Jason and Sr's crappy designs. Jr. is getting married, and Mikey sold the family house. Oh and Sr had his step kids over for Thanksgiving with both him and his wife whining about Jr. and Mikey not coming over. Gee, did you invite them? This episode and well as this last season gets an F.

American Chopper pretty much went downhill after the Discovery Channel handed the show off to TLC. It was the right thing to do to pull the plug on this show.

The Wolfman, directed by Joe Johnston and starring Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Geraldine Chaplin, and Hugo Weaving. I really enjoyed this remake of the classic 1941 Universal The Wolfman. I thought that Johnston captured the atmosphere of the first film very well and thought the performances were very good. I like the Inspector Abberline character as played by Weaving being in the film, coming off the Jack the Ripper murders and seeing these savage killings was a nice parallel. Very good film and probably not high tech or gory enough for today's teen audience. A

Thoughts: 10-February-2010

Big snow storm today, lots of people chose to stay at home and work. Not me, I was in with a few other brave folks to work a honest day's worth.

Saints defeated the Colts 31-17, Drew Brees, the Saints QB, was the MVP. This brings my overall prediction record to 5 out of 11 correct. Nice seeing the overrated Peyton Manning gets his just deserts.

24 (Fox) is going along as well as it has in previous seasons. This subplot of the two hillbilly jerks blackmailing a CTU analyst into helping them with crimes rivals the cougar stalking Dim Kim. What a pair of idiots and how can a woman with a past of being an ex con get a job at CTU? This brings the show down to a C.

TLC announced that American Chopper will end this Thursday's episode. No real surprise here, this last season has been terrible.

Heroes (NBC) has its fifth season finale this past week, boy has this show not lived up to Season 1. Looks like NBC will renew for another season. C

Thoughts: 07-February-2010

Happy Birthday Glenn and Dale, be proud of turning 48 today.

I am starting to feel better, looks like I turned the corner on the cold. Still feel crappy and will be hibernating here in my home and looking to get better to return to work tomorrow.

Still like the Saints over the Colts today, though it seems that everyone is picking the Colts to win.

American Chopper (TLC) is over. Next week is the last episode, TLC did not renew the contract. My guess is that TLC wanted the continued participation of Jr. and Mikey and Sr. wanted them off the show. It will be very interesting to see what happens to OCC in a post TV era. I am not too sad that the show is over, it should have been cancelled when it went from the Discovery Channel to TLC.

Marvel Comics is going to debut the Heroic Age post Dark Reign/Siege storyline. A new ongoing Avengers book will start up in May, and the Heroic Age is going to focus on the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. One bit of news I did not care for is that a second ongoing Iron Man series is going to start up, Iron Man: Legacy. I was hoping that Marvel is going to stop the trend of multiple ongoing series featuring the same character, oh well.

Marvel is always reviving its all ages comics featuring a number of their characters. An attempt to bring in younger readers, I guess. This appears to be Disney's influence on its new acquisition.

Naked News has stopped producing new editions of its Sunday's Naked News Magazine series. They are rerunning old NN Magazine episodes. Also lost another anchor to part time duty. I wonder if these cost cutting measures will continue. I miss have new editions of NN Magazine.

DC is going to be bringing back Bruce Wayne, who did not die, but is trapped in time. The same thing that Marvel did to Steve Rogers. I guess with Wayne back as Batman, the Batman line of comics will be undergoing some changes. I know that Birds of Prey is coming back. I like the current run of Batwoman and The Question in Detective Comics, hopefully that will continue as its own book or in Detective Comics. I don't care for either the Batman: Streets of Gotham series or the Gotham Sirens series, I would like to see those go away. Guess we will see what happens in the months to come.

I do like this DC First Wave where a number of pulp heroes are in a different universe where there are no super powers. The Spirit, Doc Savage, and a different version of Batman will be feature. Maybe we can bring back the Shadow too?

Oh well.

Thoughts: 06-February-2010

I have been sick with a cold for the last couple of days. It started Tuesday night, and got worst on Wednesday. I ended up staying home from work on Thursday and the worst of it seems over. Friday and Today, I still have coughing spasms and congestion that I cannot shake off. It seems the older you get the longer it takes to get over a cold.

Tomorrow is my younger brother's birthday, they turn 48 and still lie about their age.

Also tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday and I am sticking with my prediction of the Saints beating the hated Colts. I think the Saints' defense will shut Manning, the overrated QB that he is, right down. I was supposed to go to a Super Bowl party at my friend's house, but the way I am feeling, I will be better off staying at home and trying to get over this cold. I don't plan on watching the game at all, I can check the score either before retiring for the night or the next day.

Dollhouse (Fox) had it series finale last week and Fox did a screwjob on the viewers by airing part two of a two part show. Part one was made as an episode of Season 1, Fox decided not to show it and it was released on the DVD set. The series finale was the second part. So Fox could have done a two hour finale from 8 - 10 pm, but chose not to. This was as bad as ABC showing episode 12 of Eastwick skipping episode 11 which tied up the cliffhangers from episode 10. Dollhouse showed an improvement once they got away from the cathouse for perverted rich folk and to overthrowing the people running the dollhouses. I think that this series would have been better as a miniseries and not an ongoing show. Overall this show gets a D as I truly feel Joss Whedon really lost his way here.

American Chopper (TLC) had its usual bad episode. They build a bike for Tony Stewart that could not be driven in comfortable by anybody, what happened to OCC's brag that all their bikes are comfortable rides? We also saw the unveiling of the smoker/grill for the Jets fan that was ugly and had no football theme or Jets logos at all. One episode is left for the season and I am betting it is the end of American Chopper. F
